SE Shore of Lucid Lake - Good Fishing Spot!

Just a short local ride today.  I left the house with the intention of fishing at a local no-name lake about 1km NE of Round Lake, (dubbed Dragonfly Lake by some of the more "flowery" local residents).

There were elk standing on opposite sides of the lake today.  They called each other across the lake for the whole time I was there... excellent entertainment, and much better than the fishing as it happens!  I bait fished there for about an hour, and after twiddling my thumbs and seeing no rising fish, I took off with a better plan in mind.

I thought it might be interesting to find the NE shore of Lucid Lake.  Paul and I had watched a fisherman on the NE side of the lake when we visited the lake for the first time last year.  Coming from Doumont Trail, continue past Boomerang Lake, keep left and follow the logging road that runs along the lower SW side of Mount Benson.  Almost 10km past the lake turn right and keep right at the next Y.  The trail opens up at the end to a large turn-around area with a fire pit at its centre.  This is the best place to park and begin a short hike to the right to get to the lake shore.  The trail does continue through a series of "tank trap" obstacles, but the trail eventually ends at a logged-out clearing some distance from the lake.

There must be a group of regular campers at this location:  A small lean-to, fire pit and a tall frame designed for some special purpose are located a few metres from the lake shore.  A small  fishing peninsula has been built, or at least added to, to get a line further out into the lake.  The lake's silty bottom looks relatively snag free except for the occasional weed here and there.  There were fish rising here!  Not many, but one alone was a 100% improvement on Dragonfly Lake.

It was late and there was no time to fish today, but this spot will make a good alternative for one of our local fishing spots.

  2. hey this is one of the regular campers you refer to at lucid lake. we were camping up there just a week before you took the photos. we have recently made a nice walkway out to the lake with pallets so its easier to launch our boats. fishing is awesome with small spoons and spinners, as well as fly fishing. the big fish hang out near the middle of the lake. cheers!

    1. Hey, thanks for your input! :) Great looking campsite setup you've got going there... I guess many of the fish have moved to the centre of the lake with the recent hot weather... Deep too I imagine. Can you get any depth while fishing from the shore at that location? I'm just wondering if bait fishing with a long leader would be a good idea. Cheers, Andy :)

    2. we have never had any luck bait fishing, but so far this year i have caught 3-15 inch trout, and one 18 incher that was a good 2 pounds i bet. the lake is very shallow, i bet its no more than 12 feet at the deepest point in the middle. i would suggest a float tube or small inflatable boat to get out to the middle of the lake, and casting small silver spoons and spinners. going to lucid today to try my luck. cheers!

  3. no big ones this time, just 2 little guys. right now it is too hot out i think. there is a tonne of small fry in the lake right now, so we know that mother nature is taking care of lucid for us:) i think the best fishing is from the middle of june to the middle of july, and then the middle of september to the middle of october.

  4. That's good to hear because I'm told the authorities are doing far less lake stocking these days. I'm not sure if Lucid ever was stocked mind you.

Maybe I'll bump into you out there at some point. :)

    1. Hey excellent. Wow 20"... not bad at all! From a boat or floating rig? Deep slow trolling? I got a couple ay Kidney just a few days ago... very small though. Judging from the look of your camping site last time I looked, I'll bet you've got the place all rigged out now with a whole week there. It made me laugh at Kidney just the other day: Someone has built an outstanding 4' swinging chair out of 2" dia. logs right next to a really well built fishing dock. I guess that's what builders do when they go camping. :)

  6. hey i have an old inflatable dinghy and a minn kota trolling motor. trolling slow with a small silver spoon. sounds crazy, but it seemed like the big fish were on to me the last two days and would not bite on anything. caught 2 big ones from shore, but not off of the dock. there is a trail on the left hand side just before you enter our camping area. theres a spot in the grass you can cast from. i bet fishing will be good there right up til the lake freezes over in the winter.

    1. I'll take a look for the trail when I'm in that way next time... thx. Your setup makes me wanna throw a small inflatable dinghy on my bike and do some trolling in all the local lakes. Check out "super duper" trout lures, if you haven't already. We get lots of luck with those too. Copper colour is working well lately.

  7. Not sure if anyone still posts here, but, I am a nature lover who used to hike and camp at and around Lucid Lake. Now it's been raped by logging and there's no point going there now. Used to be that area was pure green hills behind Mt. Benson, now it looks disgusting.

    1. Yea, even worse now since they started punching more roads through. There has been a real push on for logs in this whole region recently. It seems like the roads change every time I head that way.
